Free Directory Listings - Duds (continued)

This is the Free Directory "Duds" page.  Directories listed here have either not listed sites after a reasonable period of time or have other problems, such as 302 redirects, not responding to repeated status queries after saying to contact them.  I have attempted to submit at least two sites to each directory and will update this page as information and experience is gathered.

This page is a continual work in progress, listings are entered as I review the directories and are not in any particular ranking order. Notes and credits are at the bottom of the page.

Update: 08/13/05: I have started to move directories that use a 302 redirect on their links to the "Duds" category.  Some of these directories can and do produce some traffic, but the since the search engines have problems with 302 redirects, I thought this was the best place for them.

Key to listings:

Link Required:  Is a reciprocal or partner link required?
Static Link:  Is the link static (passes PageRank™) or redirected (type of redirect)? §
PR™: What is the PageRank™ of the directory's home page? Green background denotes a PR1 or better on interior pages two levels down (note: some sites do not show interior PR on the Google Toolbar, but they do an various PR Tools).
Register:  Are you required to register or submit an email address?
Time Frame:  Actual time for a verified submission or site stated time frame, if this site is not listed yet.
DL: Does the directory allow submission of interior pages (Deep Linking)?
IBL Shown: Does search engines show back links from this directory (see notes below).

More Free Directory Listings - Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Duds, Duds-2

Starting Point - is a human edited directory with high PageRank pages. It accepts instant listings for it's "New Sites" page, but then you have to be voted into the directory (I think).

I am contacting the webmaster for a clearer explanation of how you get permanent listing. Their permanent listing links appear to go through a redirect script, but they do not show a redirect with a http header checker. Their "New Sites" links are static.

I submitted my free directory listing page and was listed on the "New Listings" page instantly.

Update: 12/06/05: I tried to contact the webmaster at Starting Point and the email was returned as undeliverable. Upon further review, I can't see how this directory is useful (based on my limited understanding) with their "instant submissions", which is full of spam. I have not been able to figure out how to submit a real listing. I will attempt to find out more.

Update 2: 12/11/05: I have moved this directory to Duds, since I can't find any way to submit to their permanent listings. Also their instant listings are mostly spam.

Update 3: 02/18/06: ( + ) The PageRank has been increased from 7 to 8.

Add Link Directory - the directory has returned with PR and was moved back to the regular listings (07/16/06)

San24.com! - a general directory that will notify you when your submission is approved.  They will allow you to submit interior pages or directories.  There is not a submission time frame stated on their site.  I submitted this site on 05/20/05 and will advise on progress.

Update: 07/14/05: PageRank™ reduced from 5 to 0

Update 2: 09/24/05: Most, if not all, pages from this directory are listed in Google's Supplemental Index.  I don't expect this directory to be of much use for link building (Note: It is not delisted)

Update 3: 01/22/06: This directory is still a PR0, but is not delisted. If nothing improves in the next PR update, I'll move it to Duds.

Update 4: 04/01/06: This directory does not resolve and therefore has moved here, to Duds.

Update 5: 04/04/06: ( + ) This site has changed it's directory software and now is showing a home page, but not any interior pages (I will check in depth later). Their PR increased from 0 to 6.

Update 6: 07/13/06: ( - ) The interior directory pages are now back, but their PageRank decreased from 6 to 0.

Active Directory - a new general directory with few listings at the present. It should be easy to get listed right now.  They have a rating system for sites.  Several of these free directories, I have reviewed recently, are all owned by the same person.  I just noticed this statement on this site and went and checked some others and it is there also; "Submit as many websites as you like. We will accept all of them ASAP."  ۩18

Update: 07/14/05: PageRank™ reduced from 4 to 3

Update 2: 01/22/06: This site in unavailable temporarily (??)

Update 3: 02/18/06: ( - ) PageRank has decreased from 3 to 0.

Update 4: 04/01/06: This directory's domain registration had expired, but it was then renewed. It is not showing their normal directory. They are just showing sponsored listings (ads). I will review this one again later.

Update 5: 04/04/06: ( + ) PageRank has increased from 0 to 5, but they are still only showing sponsored listings

Update 6: 05/14/06: Since the directory is still showing ads and doesn't appear to accept submissions, I have moved it to Duds.

Update 7: 09/28/06 (11/19/06): ( - ) The PageRank has been reduced from 5 to 0 on the majority of the datacenters. A few show PR4 as does my Google Toolbar.

Mammoth Directory - is a human edited general directory which claims a fast review time frame.  They state on the site, "Mammoth Directory is updated daily for new content. Your submission will be reviewed within 24 hours, and if accepted your listing will be live within our database in as little 48 hours". After submitting they state, "Your link is added successfully and will be applied in 24 hours".  They do not usually contact you to advise of approval.

Update: 11/27/05: Dan's SEO Friendly List has removed this directory due to too many pop up ads. I haven't noticed that (with my pop up blocker turned on) so I'm going to leave it for now. Comments anyone?

Update 2: 01/22/06: This directory is currently showing a domain parked page with ads. I will check it later.

Update 3: 02/14/06: This directory is back up with a different directory structure. They have a story about Mammoth on the home page with a link to the new directory pages. They also have deleted all previous listings and started fresh. I may resubmit and see what the current situation is. Right now, I'm ignoring them for a while.

Update 4: 02/18/06: ( - ) Their home page page rank has decreased from 4 to 3. Since they moved their directory to a subfolder, the directory is PR0.

Update 5: 04/04/06: ( + ) The subfolder increased from PR0 to PR5

Update 6: 05/21/06: This directory no longer offers a free submission options. Because of that and the other issues, I have moved this to duds. Also, because of the quality of this directory, I have added a nofollow tag to play it safe.

Update 7: 07/13/06: ( - ) PageRank decreased from 5 to 4

AnyLink.Info - is a new human edited general directory with many categories wide open so get in early. They do not state a review time frame on their site, but they do show the number sites in the review queue. At the time of my submission it was 41 sites. Their submission guidelines are quite sparse. They email you when accepted.

I submitted my Free Directory Listings page to test deep linking and was accepted in 3 hours.

Update: 05/21/06: This directory now redirects to a non-directory website. Therefore, I have moved it to duds and added a nofollow tag.

Free web directory - Add url now - is a new general directory that seems to suffer a bit from a language barrier and has lots of blank space in their design (room for more ads?). Some of the limited instructions are inaccurate or typos. They do not list a review time frame on the site. You can sort listings by name, PageRank and submission dates.

I submitted my blog and they send an email confirming your submission.

Update: 02/14/06: This directory now redirects to http://directory.seo-supreme.com/, but they appear to have retained the original database. My listing is there.

Update 2: 02/18/06: ( + ) This directory's PageRank has increased from 4 to 5.

Update 3: 04/02/06: I need to update this listing (after this update).

Update 4: 05/21/06: This directory has started adding nofollow tags to listings. Therefore, I have moved this site to duds and added a nofollow tag.

ThroughSearch - is a new general directory with an different directory structure. They also offer a free search engine submission service (remember you don't need to submit to search engines in most cases). There is not a review time frame stated on the site.

Update: 10/22/05: ( + ) Home page PageRank increased from 4 to 5

Update 2: 02/18/06: ( - ) PageRank has decreased from 5 to 4.

Update 3: 04/01/06: The directory is not currently resolving. The links to the directory from the site's home page have been de-linked (text only, not links). I will check this one again later.

Update 4: 05/21/06: The directory is still unavailable (completely now). I'll give it a little while and check back again.

Update 5: 07/13/06: ( - ) PageRank decreased from 4 to 0

Update 6: 07/16/06: The directory portion of this site does not resolve. The main site does, but doesn't appear related to a directory. Therefore, it was moved here, to duds.

Fix-8.co.uk - Human edited, family friendly directory providing static links. < That is their requested link text and description. Fix-8 is a human edited general directory where you can a featured listing for $2 or for a link back. I submitted this site with a reciprocal link and I will also submit a client's site without a link back to see if there is a difference in acceptance time.  There is not a review time frame stated on their site.  I submitted this site and it was accepted in about 10 days.  I submitted a client's site and it was accepted in about 14 days.

Update: 02/18/06: ( + ) Their PageRank has increased from 3 to 4.

Update 2: 05/21/06: They have suspended their free submission option (temporarily??). I will check this again later.

Update 3: 07/13/06: ( - ) PageRank decreased from 4 to 0

Update 4: 07/16/06: They still have not resumed their free listings and also have lost a huge number of indexed pages in Google (compared to Yahoo!). Therefore, I have moved this directory here, to duds instead of to paid.

SEO Care Web Directory - is a new general directory with several submission options: Free Listing, Free Listing with Reciprocal Link, Featured Link ($5 per month) and Featured Link (Permanent - Never Delisted from the Directory - $48). The Free Listing with Reciprocal gets listing priority over regular Free Listings. The Featured Links are above those.

They do not allow deep links and they don't have any interior PageRank yet. Their submission confirmation email states a 24 - 48 hour review period and that they will notify you of your submission status.

I submitted my base domain was accepted in 1 day.

Update: 07/13/06: ( - ) PageRank decreased from 4 to 0 and they don't show any back links and only their homepage indexed in Google (thousands of both in Y!).

Update 2: 07/16/06: moved here, to duds, due the use of nofollow attribute. I have added a nofollow on their link to play it safe.

Notes:

G, Y!, M - (IBL Shown) Denotes search engine shows directory as a back link to either this or a client's site. G = Google, Y! = Yahoo!, and M = MSN. Note: Yahoo! is known to show the largest sample of back links, Google only shows a very small sample and MSN shows something in between.  The fact the an IBL (inbound back link) is not shown in Google or MSN is not very significant.

§ - There is some debate on whether a 302 scripted redirect passes PageRank™, but due to possible problems the directories that use 302 redirects have been moved to "Duds".

۩ - These directories share the same Class C IP address (/24) block as other directories

Directory home page Toolbar PageRank™ updated as of 09/28/06. (Note: There are a small percentage of datacenters that are showing the PageRank from the 07/13/06 export, so I am using the "majority view." I was waiting to see if the datacenters would all align, so I am actually making this update on 11/19/06, but dating the PR to 09/28/06.)

Effective 10/20/05, I am adding a + or - to the PR value and the update note so it's easier to see which direction the directories PageRank is moving. If there is not a + or -, there isn't any change from the previous PR export.
