Updated: April 26, 2008.

The following is a list of free directories where you can list your website. All these directories are free (some require that you link back to them or a partner site). Some of these directories have paid submission options.

I have submitted (or attempted) to each directory and will update this page as information and experience is gathered. Since I link back to all directories (for review purposes). I will note my experience on not linking back to "Link Required" = "Optional" directories based on client site submission results, when available.

This page is a continual work in progress, listings are entered as I review the directories and are not in any particular ranking order. Notes and credits are at the bottom of the page.

Link Required: Is a reciprocal or partner link required?
Static Link: Is the link static (passes PageRank™) or redirected (type of redirect)? §
PR™: What is the PageRank™ of the directory's home page? Green background denotes a PR1 or better on interior pages two levels down (note: some sites do not show interior PR on the Google Toolbar, but they do an various PR Tools).
Register: Are you required to register or submit an email address?
Time Frame: Actual time for a verified submission or site stated time frame, if this site is not listed yet.
DL: Does the directory allow submission of interior pages (Deep Linking)?
IBL Shown: Does search engines show back links from this directory (see notes below).

More Free Directory Listings - Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Duds, Duds-2

Weblog Directory - Directory of blogs from all around the world. That is their requested link text and description. "Your Weblog Here" is a blog directory with instant listing. There are so many listings in this directory, the page you are listed on probably will not have any PageRank™, but it's still a one-way link. I listed this site with a reciprocal link and a client's site without, and both were listed instantly.

Update 2: 02/14/06: This directory really only has one category level, but the 2nd page of a most categories do show PR.

Update 3: 02/18/06: ( + ) PageRank increased from 5 to 6.

Update 4: 04/26/08: PageRank ( - ) from 6 to 4. The 2nd page of categories do not have PR. There are pages and pages in each category and no way to "search".

Hedir Web Directory provides quality online resources. That is their requested link text. This is a human edited general directory which offers both free and paid submissions.

Sponsored Listing: $25 per year gets you: 1 Business Card Page; 5 Quick Links; limited to 4 Sponsors per category; 48 business hours guaranteed site review.

Quick Listing: $14 one time charge gets you: One time fee. 48 business hours guaranteed site review.

The directory has links/pages separating sponsored and basic listings.

They do not have a submission time frame listed on their site, but they send you a nice submission confirmation email with your listing details and state "We will review your submission as soon as possible and inform you when your link is added to our index".

I submitted an interior page on 07/07/05 and will advise on progress (see Update 5 below.

Update: 12/03/05: This directory is not currently resolving.

Update 2: 01/22/06: This directory is now working (probably before this, but I hadn't checked)

Update 3: 04/01/06: This directory has changed/added a community review component to the site. info.vilesilencer shows this directory had changed to paid, but it appears that it may have changed again. I will double check on this later.

Update 4: 05/21/06: I have confirmed that the only free submission option, for this directory, is to submit for community review. In order to get your site reviewed, you have to review other sites to gain points. The points you gain moves your submitted site up the review queue. There is several other criteria (see explanation), but I'm not going to spend the time on figuring it all out. If anyone has any first hand experience with the free submission option, I would appreciate your feedback.

Update 5: 09/17/06: This gets a bit strange. Apparently, my submission of 07/07/05 got transferred to their community forum, as a post, on 11/24/05. I don't remember doing this, so maybe someone else did. I was rejected on 02/25/06 because deep linking is not allowed. I only found this when checking back links in Yahoo!. The forum posts IBL showed up but I won't count that below since I am not in their directory.

Update 6: 04/26/08: PageRank only on the home page, not on the directory listing pages.

Megri Web Directory - Megri Directory is Internet Web Directory has a pre-defined list of content rich and well designed web sites and is compiled by human editors categorised according to subject/topic and is selective. That is their requested link text. It is not clear if a reciprocal link is required, but it is definitely suggested. They ask you to email them with your link back details. This is a general directory with 3 paid submission options:

Express Review ($10 A Year): The review of your site takes place as a priority, and is usually completed within 1 business days. The Express Review fee is 10 USD and is non-refundable.
Sponsored Listings w/ Anchor Text ($25 A Year): You will receive top of category placement with anchor text of your choice. Best position for traffic and search engine results. The Sponsored Listings fee is 25 USD per annum and is non-refundable. (First Level Categories not included)
Premium Listings w/ Anchor Text ($45 A Year): You will receive listing in top first level 24 category placement and in top 10 position with anchor text of your choice. Best position for traffic and search engine results. The Premium Listings fee is 45 USD per annum and is non-refundable.

* They advise you after you submit, "The entry will be reviewed soon. There are more than 500 URL submitted per day so you have to wait for one week." I submitted an interior page on 07/11/05 and will advise on progress.

Update 1: 07/14/05: PageRank™ increased from 4 to 5

Update 2: 04/26/08: Page Rank ( - ) decreased from 5 to 3, must register for free to submit a link.

"Featured links - $25, Regular links - $10, Regular links with reciprocal link - free, Links with nofollow attribute free."

I am not finding a link to WebSEODesign.

Feed Pub - is a brand new categorized blog directory from the folks at Over the Mark. They usually start a directory and accept free listings for a while and then change to a paid model. The site claims "Your submission will be reviewed within 24 hours". They email you to confirm your submission went through and again when your listing is reviewed (approved, denied, or relocated). * They ask for a reciprocal link, but it isn't required. I submitted my blog and it was accepted in 81 days and a client's site was accepted in 82 days. I will submit another blog and see if the response is faster now and advise.

Update: 08/28/05: When checking to see if my blog was listed, I noticed there was not any sites listed on their "New Links" page. I also noticed that there was still only one other listing in the category to which I submitted (that was Over the Mark's blog). I emailed Tanya Martin at OTM to see if they were processing submissions and will advise when I hear back from Tanya.

Update 2: 08/28/05: I received a prompt reply from Tanya stating they have been busy with all their directory updates and should be getting to blog directory submissions this week. I really appreciate folks like Tanya that promptly respond to questions about their web properties (she is one of a very few exceptions, most do not reply).

Update 3: 09/24/05: They still do not appear to be processing new listings

Update 4: 10/22/05: ( + ) Home page PageRank increased from 0 to 4, but they do not appear to be processing new listings. I will write to Tanya again to see what she has to say. (later: I just received an acceptance email and I see they have accepted other listings too)

Update 5: 05/21/06: Their submission system is not functioning at this time. I will check it later and advise.

Update 6: 04/28/08: Page rank ( - ) from 4 to 3, no internal page ranks. Add a url feature doesn't appear to be operational, and New Links has nothing in it.

Fabaroo Directory - is a relatively new general directory with the typical arrangement. They also show a sites PageRank™ next to the listing. They state they accept top level domains only, no deep linking, or sub-domains. Adult, gambling or pharmaceutical sites are not allowed. There is not a time frame stated on the site.

Update: 10/22/05: ( + ) Home page PageRank increased from 3 to 4

Update 2: 04/28/08: Page rank ( - ) from 4 to 3. WebSEODesign is still listed. I cannot find how to add a link?! Links have a date listed, and none seem to be added after 2006.

Add URL-Free.com - a new general directory which claims "All links reached withing (sic) 2 clicks!". They do not have any review time frame stated on the site.

Add URL-Free offers some interesting submission options:

Regular link - Free
Sitewide link - $15 / month
Featured link - PR 3 reciprocal required
Deep link - Requires a reciprocal link from a PR 1+ page

Their pages state "The reason for the PR 0 on the subpages is because the directory was made after the last PR update". They email you upon acceptance.

Update: 10/22/05: Their internal pages now have PR and that statement has been removed. They also now state: "This is free directory with approval within one week."

Update 2: 04/28/08: Page rank ( - ) from 5 to 3. No longer free: Featured links $80 for 1 year ; Regular links $40 for 1 year, so moving to paid directories.

Quicksilver - a new general directory from the creators of the SEO Friendly List. The site states they are "The quickest SEO friendly links on the web".

Beginner's World - is a new general directory that requires a reciprocal link for a free listing. They also have two page options: $2 for a regular listing and $4 for a featured listing. I chose the reciprocal link free option. There is not a review time frame stated on the site. I submitted this site on 09/04/05 and will advise on progress.

Credits: There are numerous "Directories of Directories" on the internet, but most are not very useful. I would like to thank the two that I have found invaluable in compiling my list of reviews.

Notes:

G, Y!, M - (IBL Shown) Denotes search engine shows directory as a back link to either this or a client's site. G = Google, Y! = Yahoo!, and M = MSN. Note: Yahoo! is known to show the largest sample of back links, Google only shows a very small sample and MSN shows something in between. The fact the an IBL (inbound back link) is not shown in Google or MSN is not very significant.

§ - There is some debate on whether a 302 scripted redirect passes PageRank™, but due to possible problems the directories that use 302 redirects have been moved to "Duds".

۩ - These directories share the same Class C IP address (/24) block as other directories
(# denotes directories that share same IP address - example = ۩2)

Directory home page Toolbar PageRank™ updated as of 09/28/06. (Note: There are a small percentage of datacenters that are showing the PageRank from the 07/13/06 export, so I am using the "majority view." I was waiting to see if the datacenters would all align, so I am actually making this update on 11/19/06, but dating the PR to 09/28/06.)

Effective 10/20/05, I am adding a + or - to the PR value and the update note so it's easier to see which direction the directories PageRank is moving. If there is not a + or -, there isn't any change from the previous PR export.
