Good Free Directories Are Getting Harder to Find
Good free directories are getting harder to find! I just went through the new listings at info.vilesilencer's new forum and most of the directories had a PageRank of zero. I added one PR2 and another that was for high page rank sites only (PR4 and above), but the High PageRank Directory is a PR0 right now, guess they need to do some link building. If any of my readers find a decent directory, please let me know.
I have added a bit more data from my clients' site submissions, so you can see a range of acceptance times on some directories. I also, found one directory, Agada, that removed a client's site that was previously listed, but it was already on the "Duds" list because Google had delisted them. I have heard some rumblings lately about other directories dumping listings, so I will spot check for that too.
As for the delisted directories, it appears that they might have been picked off for linking to too many scrapper sites. If that is true, it once again reinforces that you shouldn't link to "bad neighborhoods". I use the "rel="nofollow"" attribute on my links to the delisted directories.
That's it for this week. As always, I like to hear from you via comments below or by email by clicking on my name.

I have a free directory in French with a PR 4 and I have every day some newly referenced sites (in French) and I think, there are quite a lot of free directories in French available.
Isn't it rather a problem of a given language? Could it be, that certain services are better in one language than in an other? Could it be, there are a lot languages based exceptions?
Hi Nouvelles,
I'm reasonably sure that English is the sort of the "international language" of directories (and most "general" websites too), but although I'm not well versed in international directories, I'm sure there is a lot of demand for a specific language directories.

I have complied a list of directories, SE submits and free PR submits. Many of the directories did not require a link back although a few did. View this resource here; Search Engine Web Directories Virginia and Nationwide
How do we know a website is delisted from search engine? I have no idea about it
Thanks
Hi Rookie,
Google is pretty easy to tell. Look for a site that previously had toolbar PageRank, that goes to 0 or "grey bar" (instead of white bar = 0, grey bar says something like "no info is available" when you hover over the toolbar).
Also, check the website in question at Google, with a site: command. If it used to be listed and it's gone completely, that usually means it's been de-listed (banned?).
Here is are some good sites on the subject: Google search.
Hope that helps! ;-)

Thanks. It's help a lot. I have another question. I used to have free hosting website does it matter when it comes to search engine ranking? I mean what is the potential for it to be ranked high in search engine? So far i have not been able to get listed among other sites in google SE.

Typically a "free web hosting" site does not fare as well in the search engines. I have seen some notable exceptions, but that is usually due to heavy inbound links and great original content.
With the price of web hosting so low today, you should probably go that route.
I highly recommend Lunarpages. They are the best host I have ever used!!

Hi Martin,
Can you please explain
" I use the "rel="nofollow"" attribute on my links to the delisted directories."
Thanks
Sandip Kar
Hi Sandip,
The "nofollow" attribute tells googlebot (and some other search engine's bots) not to follow a link (therefore they shouldn't factor that link into an algo factors).
Google has said that you can be penalized by linking to a bad neighborhood.
So if certain directories are "delisted" or "banned" by Google, I don't want to be caught linking to a "bad neighborhood", but I think my visitors should have the ability to click on a link to go the subject directory and see for themselves. So, I protect myself by using the "nofollow" to keep Google from referencing those links.
Google's webmaster info on "nofollow" #14.
More discussion on "nofollow" at Search Engine Watch.
Google guidelines:
In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
From: Google Quality Guidelines - Basic Principals (down the page).
Hope that helps.

PS. I will check out those directories you posted above. Thanks!
