Free Directory Listing 101
How to submit to free directories and actually get listed
Updated: 03/17/06
Several visitors have asked me for some pointers on directory submissions and how to get accepted more often, so here goes:
1. Make sure your site is ready to be reviewed by human editors. Do not submit your website while it is still under construction!
2. Find a good list of free directories. This may seem pretty obvious, but your choice of lists can greatly impact the amount of time required for the submission process. Look for lists that provide you with the information you need to decide if the directory is worth the effort, such as PageRank, is the link static, is registration required, and how long does it take to get listed.
My Free Directory Listings section is my ongoing contribution to webmasters and site owners, where I try to provide the type of information I would have liked to have found when I first started submitting sites to directories.
Here are two lists that I have used in the past and I am currently using for reference while compiling the free directory reviews:
http://info.vilesilencer.com/ - I think this is the best "list" of SEO friendly free directories and it's been very helpful in selecting which directories to submit to first. Dan, the list's editor, provides you with a downloadable Excel file and a web based list of free directories that he updates regularly. He color codes links based on whether his submissions have been accepted or not. He also notes PageRank and if registration is required. He also has other sub-sets of lists for various niches.
http://www.seocompany.ca/directory/free-web-directories.html - is another good list. Bob, this list's owner, provides up to date information on page saturation and back links. I use Bob's list to augment Dan's, which is my main resource.
I used to use this list: http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php, but although it shows as being updated regularly, I find that some of the info is not accurate or up to date. Therefore, I am not recommending this list a prime resource.
3. Prepare your submission information in advance in a word processor program. Write several different versions of your site's title or link text, description and keyword list. Make several different lengths of each one, such as title or link text using 50, 75, and 100 characters. For your description, make them range from 100 - 250 characters. Same thing for your keyword list, make different lengths with and without commas.
If you find a site that allows more or less characters than you have in your "submission info list", consider writing a longer or shorter one and adding it to your list. Remember to rotate your title or link text a bit, so all your inbound link text is not identical.
Make sure your title flows smoothly into your description. Remember the character count allowed by most sites includes spaces and therefore, is larger than what your word processor counts as letters. Always check your spelling.
After you read number 4 below, you can copy and paste your prepared text into the form on the directories. Verify that all of what you pasted is shown in the form field and that the end is not chopped off. A lot of sites do not offer you a preview of what you have entered prior to submitting and it is hard, if not impossible to get your listing changed after the fact with many directories.
4. When you are ready to start submitting, go to the directory you have selected and choose the best category for your listing. If you choose a category just for its PageRank and if your site does not really fit in that category, a lot of sites will just reject you rather than move your listing to a more appropriate category.
I try to choose the most applicable category, with most PageRank, and the fewest listings. How do I do that? I have different titles and descriptions for my site aimed at different elements of my overall theme. As an example for this website, I can use website design, search engine optimization or marketing, and webmaster resources. That usually gives me multiple categories to choose from. I have had great success in getting this site and client's site listed following this approach.
If you follow these basic steps, your submission process can be relatively painless and successful.
That's it for now. Stay tuned for more on this subject.

I have directory you may want to add to your list. This link directory is different because, when finished, it will allow users to trade reciprocal, triangle and one way links. However, right now users can only make a reciprocal trade with the directory as all the functionality is not yet finished. We manually check every submission so questionable sites will not make it in. However, it does have page rank and is set up SEO friendly.

Thanks a lot. I am searching for the directories for our website: http://www.dvb-device.com And I do try to submit to more and more directories. But I did nothing to choose good directories. Even i have not that sense. Martin helps me. But one more question: if i have submitted to many directories, the search engine will think that result is unworth to help me. Is it true? Hope to hear from you.

Hi Steven,
I still believe that you can submit to lots directories and not run afoul of the search engines guidelines. The main thing is to space out your submissions over time.
What is "right" number of submissions? I don't know, it depends on your situation. Whatever appears "nature" for your site.
When I started link building for this site, I was submitting to a couple a week. As I started to create the free directory listings section, I submitted to 5 - 10 per week (for a while).
Now I try to submit to 2 - 3 per week, but I am also getting links from other places now.
In addition to my submissions, some people are linking to me for my resources and I was recently one of the feature sites in a great article to by Robin Nobles, "Blogs With a Purpose". That brought a lot of traffic and a few links.
I avoid submitting to numerous directories on the same Class C IP block (see note in my directory reviews) and I also try to judge the quality of the directories. Most of these free directories are not super high quality, but you can usually spot and avoid the junk ones.
Hope that helps!! ;-)

Really useful info. I'm always a bit wary of submitting to directories but this info has made me more confident. My keyword base is very competitive so getting my link popularity up is vital.
My site is a riding holiday directory at http://www.findaridingholiday.com
Hi, this has given me confidence to submit my site to a few more directories. And I've also set up a blog too. So thanks very much for the inspiration.
My site is about horse riding holidays at http://www.findaridingholiday.com and my new blog which I hope to turn into a horse lovers community is http://findaridingholidayblog.blogspot.com
Well your blog is quite useful and it underlines the importance of not only submitting the same link information again and again. However I would always only advice all of you to submit to directories that are really worth it. That means directories that require reciprocal linking are of no use as long as your niche is another than that of the directory (and most likely it is, unless you want to promote a directoriy in other directories!).

Thanks for the useful SEO info. www.AudioWavesPlus.com went live in late Dec 2005. It took about four weeks after our Google sitemap was uploaded to get all the pages cached with Google. Still, we're not yet seeing any links-in at Google, but Yahoo & MSN have many. Any ideas how long it takes for Googlebot to store back-links for a new website?
Hi Audiowaveplus,
Google only "exports" a small portion of the back link data periodically. The last "export" (or update as most people call it) was around 12/19/05. It used to update about once a month, but as that link shows, it's been sporadic lately. With Big Daddy being rolled out, I would expect it to continue to be sporadic for a while longer.
Keep in mind that Google calculates back links and PageRank in real time, so your rankings won't be effected once you see the data with the link:yourdomain.com command.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the helpful information which I'll use right away. Hope to get listed on a few directories.

After eight months in Google's cache, now link:www.audiowavesplus.com shows only two links, and link:audiowavesplus.com shows no links. Several of our pages have Google toolbar PR=4, some 3 and some 2. We're listed in over a dozen directories, and have links from several different website links pages, also with PR=4. Seems like the sandbox theory does not hold anymore. Seems like those links helped our TBPR, but what about the Google back-links?
you've got one of the best infos here martin...i surely appreciate the big help that you have provided and i hope people like you multiply in the industry of SEO and SEM.

The list of directories is amazing especially for newbies who are confused where to submit and where not to get a good page rank and search engine results for a keyword. The work done by you is extarordinary. I would like to add one thing here that one should submit to high page rank directories for proper SEO benefits.
